On knowing things

I know nothing about myself, and neither do you. Let's assume our ignorance together.

In 1977 we bolted a gold-plated record to a spacecraft and threw it out of the solar system. Greetings in fifty-five languages, a heartbeat, a whale, a photograph of a supermarket. An introduction written by a species that cannot explain itself, addressed to someone who is probably not there.

It's still going. Nobody has answered.

On being oneself

Being yourself is the most impossible thing a person can do, and also the one thing nobody can avoid. He can't stop being himself. He also never quite arrives.

He makes concessions. He used to think the concessions were the mask and the real one was underneath, waiting. Now he thinks the one conceding is the one who needed to, and the needing is also him. There's no better version behind the door.
